an outstanding academic to lead the Department of Social Anthropology, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious departments in South Africa.  Established in 1922, it has been the home to many distinguished scholars.  

The incumbent will be expected to take on the headship of the department for the next three years at least, and provide intellectual leadership, locating the work of the department within a South African context, the African continent and globally.  Appointment will be as soon as possible.

The Department has a strong record of teaching and research in social-cultural anthropology with a political-economic emphasis, focusing particularly but not exclusively on Southern Africa. Our present expertise is in medical anthropology, the anthropology of development, migration, ethnicity, identity, diaspora, gender and sexuality, violence and social justice, memory and narrative, and the anthropology of knowledge. 

We seek a leading scholar in socio-cultural anthropology with a strong research profile and an internationally recognised publication record; experience in academic leadership; considerable graduate and undergraduate teaching and supervisory experience (especially at the PhD level); strong administrative ability and experience; and a track record of participation in international scholarly networks, including the global South.

 

The annual remuneration package, including benefits, is R514 501.
